I’m not an obsessed Twilight fan. I thought the books were entertaining, but I’m not emotionally attached to the characters. However, I do enjoy getting caught up in something that’s FUN. I like catchy fan quotes like “My heart belongs to my husband; my neck belongs to Edward.” I like imagining myself wearing a T-shirt that says, “LA PUSH DIVING TEAM.” Like I said on my personal blog, I’m a sucker for a themed party. And seeing a Twilight movie is one big, vampirey party.
I’m also a sucker for an adaptation. It’s exciting to see the tweaks a director inserts into a story that’s already beloved by so many, while hopefully creating a fresh, new work along the way. Here’s what I discovered during my viewing of New Moon.
What I liked:
-Jacob. I’ll admit that before I saw the movie, I would cringe at the sight of Taylor Lautner in the previews. I really, really didn’t think I’d like him. I didn’t think he was attractive at all, but actually funny looking. I was wrong. His acting was top-notch. I’ve heard people say that he was “a breath of fresh air” from the seriousness of Bella and Edward’s relationship, which is true. When you see him when he cut off his hair for the first time, it was a breath of fresh air.
-Like I’ve said before, Edward is a Drama Queen. (It’s okay to love a character but still have some things annoy you). Of course he has to be a drama queen in order for there to be enough drama in the story, so we can forgive him.
-The wolves weren’t as hokey as they could’ve been. They looked good.
-I like Charlie. In the books he bothers me because Bella babies him and he doesn’t know how to cook a pot of spaghetti. But he’s charming and very dad-like and loveable in the movies.
-Dakota Fanning’s young and therefore very vampire-like face was refreshing. She was a perfect vampire because she’s only 15. A part of me thinks all the vampires should be people who are under 18. I think it would be a cool effect to have them all look so young.
-Any scenes with Victoria. I think she’s beautiful and her red hair was visually striking.
-Scenes with the classical score (the music).
-Did you notice the faint outline around Aro’s lips…blood red! Like that was his drink of choice for the past few hundred years, go figure.
-Carlisle’s accent of an America gone by.
What we can make fun of:
-All the people who kept saying this actor or that actor was changed under the new director. I heard many times that Alice was different or Rosalie was different or whatever. They were all the same!
-Edward appearing to Bella. I shook my head as I watched this. I thought that’s how it was in the books and kept thinking, “Why didn’t they change it so it was just his voice? It looks so cheesy!” Then I found out that it was just his voice in the books. It would’ve been okay to have him appear once or twice, but more dramatic to have just heard his voice. I can see why they did what they did, though. It is a movie; you’re supposed to see things.
-The acting was lackluster for me, mostly in Edward, Alice, and the rest of the Cullens, as sparsely as they were seen. Excluding Jacob.
-Edward. He didn’t bother me in Twilight the movie, and I couldn’t put my finger on what it was here that did. My friend nailed it when she said that he has a smirk on his face and looks down to the side. Do you know what I’m taking about? He has a nice face, but the smirk-like expression made me crazy (not in a good way). Or it just dawned on me that maybe it’s because I hate it when men in movies make the decision to leave because they think it’s for the greater good. It’s egotistical.
-I think we can fairly make fun of the decrepit, old looking Volturi sitting in one of the chairs in the back. Aren’t they supposed to look young?
-The choice of music was terrible. I loved the music in Twilight, but in New Moon it was random and forced, instead of enhancing the scene like it’s supposed to. The exceptions were the classical score, which was beautiful, and the song during the scene where Victoria was running through the woods and Charlie’s friend had a heart attack. I don’t remember what the song sounded like but it was well-placed.
-Is it wrong to make fun of the name “The Twilight Saga” itself?
All in all, I’d say I don’t know how I feel about this movie. I feel like I’m lying when I say “I liked it,” but I didn’t dislike it, either. Maybe time will tell.
This review is a fun start for this blog. I like examining the little details that make a movie work or not work, that do the job of engrossing us the viewer. There will be many more to come.
I liked the old decrepit Volturi! Maybe he was old when he turned. I thought this movie was pretty entertaining, although the love triangle makes me really sad. I think I'm starting to realize that I like the movies more then the books. Also, I am such a Taylor Lautner fan!!
ReplyDeleteYeah. I'm glad you and Mindy started this. I agree with most of the things you said. I thought the worst Edward scene was when he crushed his phone after thinking Bella was dead. I almost started laughing because it was so bad but I didn't really think the rest of it was bad. I enjoyed the movie, though, and want to see it again. I disagree about the music. I thought it was very fitting, so much so, that it didn't stand out to me which song was played during a specific scene (except the scene where she was sitting in the chair). I was also wanting to pay attention to the music because I was considering buying the soundtrack, which I did after the movie and I love it. Oh, I hated the Cullen's contacts. They were so much more fake looking in this movie. Why didn't they use the same ones from Twilight?
ReplyDeleteI think I would like the soundtrack, too- even though I didn't think it fit in the movie for some reason. And I didn't realize that vampires who are old when they change will be stuck in their age. I thought they always looked young or ageless for some reason.
ReplyDeleteAbout the old Volturi, isn't there something in the book about when they just sit around they kind of turn into stone? I can't remember exactly, but there were some in the 4th book with grey eyes(?) because they sat for something like a couple hundred years? And, I always thought the same thing Mindy said, that they stay the age of when they were "changed," just like Edward will always look 17, but his parents were both a bit older so they look older. All in all, great review. Obviously, I liked the movie, but I thought your review was fun to read and I agreed with a lot of it. I'm curious to see how I like it the second time around. You know I'm going with Peter!
ReplyDeleteMel, this blog is a great idea! I can't believe you started it in August but haven't done anything with it til now!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to say that I pretty much agree with your whole review! I've never liked Edward and feel like his relationship with Bella is not at all as deep as in the books. The whole time I kept wishing she would end up with Jacob (even though I know she doesn't) because he is so much more likeable and their relationship seems so much more real. I also was totally thrown with the music. I kept thinking how weird it was for the scenes it was playing. I can see how it would be a good soundtrack though.
Man, did you guys watch the movie with a notepad? I am amazed at how much you remember. Everyone thought I was crazy to drive from SF to LA to go to the movie with Lauren. It was so much fun. There were so many people there and we thought we might not even get in even though Lauren had these special tickets that she got up really early to get! I liked the movie. I thought the new director really did change the feel of things. I thought Taylor was great. He is a real cutie and will go far if he can keep things in place! I disagree with Mel. I liked that fact that Edward left before things got "out of hand." I wish more people would use their heads a little more when they are in realtionships, instead of letting things go too far and then "change their minds" when they knew all along things would not work. I think that is what Stephanie Meyer was trying to say. I cringe when I hear of a couple who have broken up several times decide to get married.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point, Janene. I like that line of thinking. But I don't think the lying part was right- if he had been straight with her about his reasons for leaving maybe it would've softened the blow just a tad.
ReplyDeleteI think that what drives me so crazy about this movie and the first one is that Edward and Bella's relationship doesn't translate onto film. Instead of spending the time developing their relationship, which is the whole point of the books, Hollywood goes strait for the action. Bella and Edward just seem like infatuated teenagers that are way to serious for what we have been given about their relationship. (we only really get it because we have read the books) Unlike say, a pride and prejudice movie that spends the whole thing talking and developing their relationship with very little, "action." You can tell that I have the same English major problem. Now I feel like I have to go re-read the books to remember that I really do like them since although I was entertained by the movie it is just so sub standard compared to spending a few days reading the book. Also, I want to note that I have no idea how they are going to convince us in Eclipse that Bella and Robert are better than Bella and Taylor since he is just way more believable.
ReplyDeleteLoved your review Mel and I agree with most everything you said...
ReplyDeleteLike the acting--I thought for the most part it sucked. Jacob was, for me, the only great part about this movie. In fact (am I really admitting this?) I almost teared up when Bella denied him for the last time and left him. He is so much better for her than Edward....but ok I'm not going to get into all of that. I guess my ultimate point is that I'm more for the "build a foundation of friendship while you fall in love" as opposed to the "love at first sight" kind of thing (which I've always felt that's what Edward and Bella had).
The score/music was beautiful. I still listen to the Twilight soundtrack in my car all the time and after this movie I didn't think I liked this music as much. But after seeing the movie a second time (thanks to Marcia's visit), I like it a lot more and will definitely be purchasing it. I think the music is awesome--particularly Possibility by Lykke Li (when she's in the chair during those months of depression), and my personal favorite Roslyn by Bon Iver & St. Vincent. That song is magical to me.
One of the things that bothered me was critics going on and on about Dakota Fanning in this movie. Yes, she was good, yes she looked the part, but seriously people she had like 2 lines. Don't make her part bigger than it actually was.
Great review Mel, can't wait to read more.
